Make Some Time to Check on Your Child's Goals

If you haven’t already, now is a great time for parents to make some time to speak with their children about how they are tracking in regards to any goals set at the start of the school year. If you are a parent and aren’t sure how to make this conversation a productive one, The Tutoring Center, Cypress TX has prepared the below article to help.

Learn About Their Goals and Progress

It’s likely that your student hasn’t even shared their goals with you, so the first step is to learn what they are. Don’t be afraid to write them down on a notepad so that you can keep track of them as the school year nears its end. Once you have this, find out about the progress your child is making and whether or not they are likely to achieve each goal. When you have this conversation, it’s important that your child feels comfortable telling you the truth as there is a chance that they may tell you that they are falling behind. If this is the case, be sure to respond with support and encouragement.
  • Start by looking at ways to help them recover lost time and get their progress back on track. Something as simple as providing a small amount of additional homework help each session or helping them to find time in their schedule can often be enough.
  • If, however, it just isn’t realistic for them to reach a goal by the time the school year ends, it’s important that they don’t simply quit. Instead, consider altering the goal. This could be reducing the number of books they set out to read or lowering the proficiency level they were hoping to achieve learning in an additional language.
While it isn’t ideal, it is better for your student to reduce their goals and use their remaining time to achieve something than it is for them to simply give up.

Complementary Goals

If your child is at the other end of the scale and is not only on track to reach each goal but is also likely to have additional time, don't be afraid to discuss additional complementary goals. If your child is learning a language, consider adding a small amount of more difficult nouns or verbs to their lexicon. If they finish reading a series of books, look for books associated with the main series written by the same author. This can maximize their learning and make use of their additional study time.
